Making Indian Railways Safer with RailAcoustic®

Track Inspection

Project Background

The Indian Railways operates one of the world's largest rail networks, facilitating the daily movement of 13,523 passanger trains and 9,146 freight trains across 7,355 stations, spanning an extensive track length of 126,366 kilometers. However, like any other asset, these tracks are prone to erosion due to factors of extreme weather conditions, fatigue and overloading among others, requiring regular monitoring and maintenance.

Traditionally, track inspection and maintenance along this vast network has relied on manual methods involving surveyors and trolley inspections. However, these approaches are susceptible to human error and lack the agility needed to address defects promptly. As a result, safety concerns persist, with defects often going undetected until after a train has traversed the track, leading to potential accidents despite dedicated efforts to upkeep safety.

Our Solution - RailAcoustic®

Recognizing the urgent need for a more agile and efficient track inspection solution for the safety of Indian Railways, we are introducing RailAcoustic® - the world’s only proven and patented system in the acoustics domain for continuous track condition monitoring and broken rail detection.

Rail Acoustic

About RailAcoustic® Technology

Inspired by how whales communicate with each other, RailAcoustic® utilizes the principles of acoustics for broken rail detection. It detects by generating a vibration signal of predetermined frequency to the tracks at a certain point, then monitoring this vibration via a sensor located near the signal injection point and from another sensor located at a far away point. By correlating both detection results the system is able to derive a conclusion on the health of the rails.

What is detected with RailAcoustic®?

Broken rails are detected before any train arrives, remotely, accurately, and automatically by the acoustic sensors attached to the rails at each 2 km distance.

Major internal rail defects and their locations are detected precisely by the same acoustic sensors.

Partial rail cracks are detected before they become a real threat for railway traffic safety.

Floods are becoming a major threat to every part of our lives recently. Floods on the railway tracks are now detected before any train arrives.

Major rail flaws which can be a threat to railway traffic safety are now detected acoustically by RailAcoustic®.

Landslides are detected in real-time.

Buckled rails as a result of extreme temperature variations are detected.

Track washout as a consequence of floods is detected before any train arrives.
